If it’s the latter, then you read about how Rafa would have done everything differently if he had known how much you would mean to him. Or about how making you laugh was as satisfying as making you come. Or that he was selfishly glad that you only got a part-time job so that you would stay with him. Did you get to the part where he was nearly overcome by your beauty while you played? Do you think he was imagining watching that performance from his bed when he bought that piano for you?

Maybe it’s an unconscious defense mechanism, though it won’t do any good to protect him against the kind of hurt he’s vulnerable to here.

I still am. I think I might always be in love with you” Then he’d probably start apologizing for saying it.

Of course, he’s way too polite to actually burden someone with “unwanted” feelings like that, but I hope, regardless.

To elaborate, I’ve been waiting for chapters for them to talk about the diary. Maybe, now, through the book they will begin talking TO each other instead of AT each other. That is my two cents, adjusted for inflation.

Now, Mouse, you know how much I love your art. As an artist myself, I know you’re a rolling cauldron of insecurity without tangible, meaningful feedback. If you didn’t get the sarcasm in that last sentence, shame on you.

Anyway, what about the watercolor wash? Lovely, subtle touch exactly like your overall work. What I most enjoy is how you draw life. The body language, petting the cats, the angle of panel views to evoke emotion. The detail of tail positions with the kitties. The position of Elan’s head as he talks about the book. You are so attentive to detail that someone like me is in heaven. Rarely do I find an artist that puts so much care into the smallest pencil stroke. I adore your work.

If I have a criticism it is how your presentation has not evolved over time. I am a sketch artist. The fanciest I enjoy going is marker renderings–what I call a quick and dirty cheat of your watercolor painting. Every sketch I draw is better than the one before it. You have maintained a consistent level of skill throughout the series to date. I am accustomed to watching as an artist improves with every page. I just bet that you are attentive enough to detail that you go to great length to maintain that consistency of appearance. My criticism leads me back to your strength.

Don’t change, Mouse. Sure, grow, improve, become the best possible artist and storyteller you can be, but I beg you to never surrender the attention you put into the smallest details. Those small details thank you. Love you much! I can’t wait until next time!
