Elan, for all his flaws and weaknesses, is still developed as a complex character capable of great strength and bravery as well as being flawed in a perfectly understandable and human way.

My reaction was to that element of him, that he’s essentially jeopardizing himself and his newly acquired strength by behaving in what is ultimately a childish and self indulgent manner (in my opinion).

Also, I’m just feeling all the Rafa feels, because he’s who I relate to the most and care about more (sorry!). I really can’t wait to see how it all works out :3

No way in hell this is a Mary Sue/Gary Stu Mice. I understand Mary Sue stories to be ultimately selfish and self-centered. EMR breathes, it speaks to me on many levels. I relate to it personally and I hope for happiness for the boys because I want that happiness in my life. It is touching and deep, gentle and yet it slaps us with the harsh realities of life. The lesson I take from EMR is to be kind. To listen and accept that I’m human. To accept that others are only human too. Be patient because we can’t always articulate how we truly feel. These are good lessons. Lessons I take home and appreciate.

The diary speaks of Rafa’s thoughts during that horrible time. Even if Elan leaves he might read the diary and learn the truth. Interesting way to keep the story moving and keep hope alive.
