I thought of it as Rafa putting Elan’s diary away. A necessary “letting go” before the next step in the story. That said, I wonder if Mice means “fun-filled” literally or sardonically. I suspect Chapter Three might make the drama of the previous two look like a picnic.

Rafa has become more introspective, learned that he’s outgrown Jake, and that he does want committed love in his life. Elan has learned that he can physically defend himself and remembered that he can be physically desirable, even though he doesn’t realize the emotional commitment Rafa has to him.
