Chapter 25 - Page 2

  • Wonder if Elan knows just how shady The Corner Hole‘s reputation is? Would Elan care?

I guess since “lovely music” is coming from TCH, that Elan must be inside playing the piano? ^_^ Though I don’t think Rafa is too happy with that.

Hudson looks like he might want to come back at some point in the future. He is definitely enjoying this. ^_^

    • bandanajack

oh hi there. fancy running into you here…

      • lol, I have been here for over a year. ^_^ I also tend to get around. ^_^

        • This is where I know Doki best! Heyla, Bandajack! Small internet, eh?

    • kuku

Is it really that shady, or is Rafa playing it up?

      • While not a reputable place, I doubt he would have ever brought Elan there if it was that bad.

        • kuku

Yeah, that’s what I thought. And Scott works there!

          • JesBelle

I’m pretty sure messing with Hudson is the best strategy for getting through a day spent with Hudson. I sound like I really hate him. As a character, he fills me with glee, but as a person, he’s exactly the sort who would probably bring out my mean streak.

          • kuku

I agree he’s a great character. As a person, I would just avoid him!

          • Unfortunately, he is heavily based on real life.

          • Lleyn

He is a great character for story-telling purposes. Meeting him in real life would probably make me want to murder him.

          • kuku

I’m so sorry (for your sake, in real life) to hear that.

          • You run into these types in rich urban centers. Feel more sad that Arthur is part of reality too.

          • kuku

I don’t remember who Arthur is?

          • Jonni

If your comments on this page are anything to go by, your mean streak is awesome.

          • JesBelle

A little too awesome sometimes, which is why I don’t indulge it much. I’d make an exception for Hudson, though.

  • JesBelle

Soooo… Hudson needs to keep telling interesting stories to keep his co-workers from just flat-out killing him? It all makes sense now.

    • It is a dog-eat-dog in the journalistic world.

    • Lleyn

I bet Hudson was the popular kid in school.

      • JesBelle

You think he had social skills then? I suppose he probably acts very differently in his own milieu. I’d love to see him with different cliques, though. “You play football? How delightfully brutal! It’s like a modern gladiatorial contest. The gladiators were blah blah, ancient Rome, yada yada…”

        • kuku

I think Lleyn is being sarcastic?

          • JesBelle

Heh, you’re probably right. I was so carried away with my idea of Hudson just always being so oblivious that I forgot to look for subtext.

          • Lleyn

Heh, but I liked your imagined monologue of him trying to make friends. I just have the eerie feeling that he wasn’t beaten up too often by the other kids, otherwise he’d have shut up by now. Probably went to a school where monologuing was encouraged.

          • Lleyn

*g* Should I have put a sarcasm warning up?

  • JesBelle

What happened to “one of my favorite hangouts,” and “best billiard hall in town!” Rafa?

It reminds me of how he went from, “Hey, there’s Jake and Chuy… and Gordo!” to “I bought him a piano so that he wouldn’t have to hang around those creeps.”

    • Lleyn

*Sigh* Oh, those days when Rafa wasn’t afraid to show his caring (for Elan) side instead of hiding it under a mask of artsy cynicism. Elan has every right to be worried about him.

  • kuku

Oh, I definitely agree on Rafa – but it’s sad to see him taking spending his time with someone he feels contempt for.

Hudson seems to get off on “poverty porn”.

    • Jonni

      Derelicte?

      • kuku

I don’t know Zoolander, and I may not have used the phrase “poverty porn” quite accurately. Wikipedia defines it as “any type of media, be it written, photographed or filmed, which exploits the poor’s condition in order to generate the necessary sympathy for selling newspapers or increasing charitable donations or support for a given cause” – like always showing pictures of hungry crying children, that give you the impression that poor people are helpless and let other people feel paternalistic. That isn’t exactly what Hudson’s doing, but he is seeing poor people as sort of alien creatures and looking to exploit this “dangerous” trip to glorify himself and build his reputation and career.

        • Jonni

I was being silly, but you hit the nail right on the head about Hudson. He doesn’t care, he seems to see the rest of the world as just being there to serve his desires. Life needs to throw him a custard pie or two til he gets over himself.

  • bronakopdin

    oh dear this dude xD

  • Jonni

If you asked this guy what the title of this story is, what’s the bet he would say “Hudson meets Rafa”?

I don’t think he’s ill-meaning, he just has no clue about anyone outside himself.

    • Lleyn

You know, I can’t shake the feeling that Hudson, too, is pulling Rafa’s leg somewhat. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I really think he is this stuck-up, pretentious artsy type, but I think perhaps he’s exaggerating that for his own private joke at Rafa’s expense or in retaliation of Rafa’s obvious condescension.

      • Jonni

If he’s exaggerating to play up to Rafa’s comments, then he’s self-aware enough to laugh at himself, so he’d be poking fun at himself as much as Rafa – which would be a nice playful bit of fun. If not, and that Scheherazade comment is serious, then the word “pretentious” needs to be twenty foot tall in glowing neon to describe Hudson.

      • kuku

I agree that it’s hard to be believe he could really be as pretentious as he seems, but his facial expressions just don’t seem that self-aware. (Self-absorbed, yes.)

  • IronDog

This story you seek, Hudson, is closer than you think.
